Managing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Clinical Practice: Best Practices
in Local Events
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Individuals experiencing alcohol use disorder (AUD) are a vulnerable population that has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The healthcare system is being taxed in all areas by COVID-19, and those with AUD face dire consequences as treatment and recovery services face operating challenges. Despite the availability of many treatments proven to help people with AUD, only a minority of patients receive treatment of any kind.
This activity is designed to encourage and motivate primary care/inpatient providers and addiction care team members that they play integral roles in providing care and treatment for patients battling AUD. The goal of this activity is to build healthcare professionals’ confidence in strategies for the individualized treatment, care coordination, and follow-up of the patient with AUD, and to ensure that established guidelines and evidence-based practices are applied across a variety of clinical presentations.
To incorporate the patient perspective, woven throughout the curriculum will be short vignettes with case-based scenarios that model challenging interactions around initiating and maintaining treatment for AUD. Due to COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions, the vignettes will feature scenarios involving telemedicine and how to model an appropriate telemedicine appointment where there is discussion of AUD screening and treatment.
