Description: It is necessary for human service professionals to understand, acknowledge, and respond to the ways in which clients’ experiences impact them. Mitigating this impact allows the work to be sustainable and for human service professionals to be able to provide the highest levels of care. This 2-hour training covers the scope and impact of trauma and provides an in-depth understanding of the toll that working with people who have been through trauma has on human service professionals through vicarious and direct exposures, as well as acknowledging that rates of early adversity for those who go into this work tend to be higher than in other fields. Advances in the concepts of trauma stewardship and toxic stress will be described. The framework of the 3Rs of Self-Care: Reflection, Regulation, and Relaxation will be introduced, and examples of safe and healthy coping strategies in each of these domains will be provided. Participants will be asked to reflect on their own understanding, history, and methods for coping, and to consider ways to address the barriers to engaging in self-care on personal, systemic, and societal levels, so that they may remain able to provide optimum levels of intervention.
