FDA Approves Over-The-Counter Naloxone
The conventional therapy for opioid overdose is naloxone, a drug that quickly reverses the symptoms of an overdose. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Narcan (a brand of Naloxone), 4 milligram (mg) naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray for over-the-counter (OTC), nonprescription, use. This decision opens the door for the life-saving treatment to reverse an opioid overdose to be sold online and directly to consumers in locations including gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, and drug stores.
